Playa Costambar is located 1 km. west of Puerto Plata, between Confresi and Puerto Plata. There are a couple of white signs showing where the turn off is and it is 1.5 km from the main road. Go through the gates with security........sort of looks like a resort entrance and keep heading towards the water, when the road comes to a Y keep left..........and you will come to the beach. This beach has different sand from what I'm used to seeing in the Dominican Republic. Crushed shells are heavily mixed with the sand, so it makes it very interesting to see if intact shells can be found. There are various beach restaurants (even a austrian one), typical of the DR and some small restaurants in town. From the street side everything in Costambar is quite rundown, but apparantly it is an up and coming place. We did find an unexpected restaurant called Catamaran. Owned by Eli Sharon formally of Kenya. Delightful owner who tries hard to please. The restaurant is directly on the beach and on his card it stated on Catamaran Beach or Playa. Please look at the Playa Catamaran for exact location. Atypical are his spices that he uses. Zanzibar chicken, Sweet curried dishes from Kenya's cuisine. Ingredients are brought in fresh daily and he told me any left overs go to the staff. He also rescues turtles from ending up as jewellry or in someones kitchen.
